  2. Commonly used terms

    1. Q. What is an ACAT?

ACAT’s help older people and their carers work out what kind of care will best meet their needs when they are no longer able to manage at home without assistance. ACAT’s provide information on suitable care options and can help arrange access or referral to appropriate care, in your home or in our home. The Australian Government provides funds to the State and Governments, specifically to operate and manage the ACAT’s.
ACAT’s also assess and approve older people for Australian Government subsidised aged care, such as residential aged care and care packages.  More information about ACAT’s can be found on the Department of Health and Ageing website.

    2. Q. What is a care package?

A care package is a flexible, individualised, coordinated package of support. The package is designed for older people who have complex needs and would prefer to stay at home rather than move into an aged care facility. The coordinator will consult with the client about their needs and together develop a service plan to meet the needs of the client to enable them to remain living at home. Regular review of services will be carried out to ensure they continue to meet the client’s needs and alternations to the service carried out as appropriate. Care packages are also known as Community Aged Care Packages (CACP), Extended Aged Care at Home Packages (EACHP) and Home and Community Care (HACC). More information can be found at the Australian Government Department of Health & Ageing website here.
