Weavers

Weavers – providing support for carers

‘Weavers’ are volunteers who have experience of caring for a loved one. They use these experiences to support others who are going through challenging times in their caring journey. The Weavers program was designed with carers, for carers.

Weaver volunteers use what they have learnt in their own caring journey to walk alongside someone who may be feeling overwhelmed and to help them work through the challenges and regain a sense of control in their caring situation.

The Weavers program was launched at Helping Hand’s Mawson Lakes aged care home in February 2017. It is the first site in Australia to offer Weavers. Helping Hand partnered with The Australian Centre for Social Innovation (TACSI) to design and develop the program, and Helping Hand aims to grow the program further across our aged care homes.

Aileen is the Local Connector at Helping Hand Mawson Lakes. Her role is to connect experienced Carers with new Carers.

If you are interested in volunteering at Helping Hand Mawson Lakes as a Weaver, or would like more information on receiving support from a Weaver volunteer, please contact Claire Stone, Residential Services Manager at Mawson Lakes on 8360 2500.

There is further information about Weavers in this press release from the program launch.

“I love being able to make such a big difference to people’s lives by doing something I feel is so easy,” she says.
