Formal process to ensure aged care facility meets Commonwealth Government standards. |
| Advocacy |
The process by which your rights and interests are represented by a person you have nominated. |
| Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency |
The Agency contracted by the Commonwealth Government to conduct accreditation assessments for residential aged care facilities. |
| Ageing in place |
The practice allowing a person to remain in the same residential site as their care needs increase. |
| Bond |
An amount a person may be asked to pay when entering into low care or extra service high and low care in a residential site. A significant portion of this bond amount is refunded when a resident leaves aged care. |
| Community Aged Care Packages |
Government subsidised services provided to assist you to remain living in your own home. |
| Domestic care |
Assistance with chores around your home which may include house cleaning, dish washing, gardening and unaccompanied shopping. |
| Fully Accredited Facility |
A residential facility that has passed independently assessed Commonwealth Government standards. |
| High care |
Government term used to define residential care for frail people who require assistance with all or most aspects of their daily life. |

Support provided in your own home. |
| Hydrotherapy |
Physical therapy in a pool. |
| Low care |
Government term used to define residential care for people who require assistance with some aspects of their daily life. |
| Occupational Therapy |
Support and equipment to maintain physical independence and wellbeing for day-to-day living. |
| Personal care |
Care provided in your home which may include preparing meals, bathing, toileting, dressing and grooming. |
| Physiotherapy |
Therapy that uses exercise and massage to assist with physical rehabilitation. |
| Podiatry |
The care and maintenance of feet. |
| Police Check |
A national summary of an individual’s offender history.
Under the Aged Care Act 1997, all aged care employees and volunteers are required to have a current National Police Certificate. |
| Rehabilitation Services |
Includes hydrotherapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy. |
| Residential aged care |
A residence, sometimes referred to as ‘nursing home’ or ‘hostel’, providing low and high care. |
| Respite |
Respite is the provision of short-term care in both community and residential settings. |
| Retirement Living |
Independent living which provides maintenance of building and gardens, in a village environment. |
| Secure unit |
Secure residential accommodation within a residential site, to accommodate older people who wander and may be at risk in relation to personal safety. |
