Accessing a Home Care Package

At Helping Hand we are happy to support you through the process of accessing a Home Care Package as we know it can be confusing. Please call us on 1300 653 600 and our friendly staff will assist you through the process.

1. The first step to access a Home Care Package

You need to check your eligibility with My Aged Care. My Aged Care is a national gateway into aged care services operated by the Commonwealth Government. Yourself, a family member or a friend can check your eligibility by phoning My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or by visiting their website www.myagedcare.gov.au. Alternatively, the Helping Hand team can assist you in contacting My Aged Care.

If your care needs indicate that you may need a Home Care Package, My Aged Care will arrange an assessment with a member of your local Commonwealth Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT).

2. Following the assessment

Following the assessment, the ACAT will write to you to let you know the level of care you are eligible for and approved to receive, as well as an overview of that care.

Once you have received this letter, call Helping Hand to talk through your service options based on your needs and the level of care you require (as determined by the ACAT assessment). You are also welcome to contact us at any time on 1300 653 600.

There are four levels of Home Care Packages based on the level of care required:
• Level 1 supports people with basic care needs
• Level 2 supports people with low-level care needs
• Level 3 supports people with intermediate care needs
• Level 4 supports people with high-level care needs

3. Talk to Helping Hand about the costs

A Helping Hand staff member will ask you about your income in order to determine the amount you will need to contribute towards your Home Care Package.
