Residential Respite

Being a carer is hard work, and at Helping Hand we know how difficult it can be to get a break from that important role. Our skilled staff are on hand to step in and support you in the caring and support you provide, with our respite services.

Residential respite accommodation is available at most Helping Hand aged care homes for a minimum of two weeks, and bookings are essential. We also offer flexible respite in your own home or in one of our community respite cottages.

People who stay with us for respite at one of our aged care homes have single room accommodation with private ensuite, and access to all the facilities and activities of the home for the duration of their stay.

Why have a respite visit?

Respite can offer a break for people in caring roles, giving them time to recharge their batteries and ensuring they don’t burn out. It gives the person being cared for a chance to meet and socialise with new people, while being provided with the care and support they need. It also can provide an opportunity for someone considering moving in to an aged care home to see what it’s like before making a permanent move.

Am I eligible to book a respite stay?

Respite bookings in an aged care home require ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team) approval. If you haven’t had an ACAT assessment, contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or on the My Aged Care website and they can arrange it.

How much does it cost?

The Australian Government subsidises a range of aged care services in Australia. They also set the amount that you pay per day to contribute towards the cost of your care while you stay with us. Currently (as from 20 March 2019) this is $51.21 per day. We also ask you to pay a booking fee of $170 prior to the start of your respite stay – this is not an extra payment, it is deducted from the fee total and refundable if you cancel the booking with more than seven days notice.

Some people may be eligible for fee reductions or fully funded respite (eg. veterans and war widows). For more information, call us on 1300 653 600.

Where do we offer residential respite?

We offer respite at the following locations:

Adelaide metropolitan homes:

  • Golden Grove (from 20 May 2019)
  • Ingle Farm
  • Lightsview
  • Mawson Lakes
  • North Adelaide
  • Parafield Gardens

South Australian regional homes:

  • Carinya, Clare
  • Belalie Lodge, Jamestown
  • Lealholme, Port Pirie

What if I become unwell during my stay?

If you become too unwell to stay at the residential aged care home, we will arrange an ambulance to make sure you receive the best care in a hospital environment. If you have information, such as an Advance Care Directive, that details how you would like to be treated in an emergency situation, please let us know when you are booking your respite stay.

If you need to stay in hospital for longer than 24 hours during your respite stay, there are financial implications if you would like us to hold the respite room. We will explain the details when you book your respite stay.

How do I book in?

Fill in the enquiry form or give us a call on 1300 653 600. We will have a talk about your care needs and see if we have availability for the dates you had in mind.
