People of Helping Hand: Kathryn

Kathryn is a Gardening Team Leader in our Home Care Services Team.

Kathryn

When Kathryn was handed a pair of gardening secateurs at the age of ten, it sparked a lifelong love of gardens and gardening. ‘It’s wonderful, when something you have grown up loving as a hobby, becomes the thing you love to do as a living.’

Kathryn is a Home Care Gardening Team Leader, providing horticultural advice and overseeing a team of almost thirty gardeners.

Gardeners in Home Care occupy a particular role, which goes behind mowing lawns and trimming hedges. ‘To a degree, gardeners can also be an extra pair of eyes and ears to what is happening in a client’s world. Empathy and being able to communicate with older people can be just as important as the gardening aspect of the role.’

‘My greatest satisfaction is making a difference not only to someone’s garden, but to their wellbeing as well. As a gardener, I know what a difference it makes when the garden’s tidied and maintained.’

When she is not working, Kathryn enjoys tending her own garden in the Adelaide Hills. ‘I love English cottage style gardens and I also have an herb garden and a native garden. At the moment, my garden is mostly Spring bulbs, camellias, and lots and lots of autumn leaves.”
