With a background in teaching dance in schools and childcare centres, Allyson says she was looking for a change. ‘I felt it was time to “settle down” in a stable working environment and most importantly, to be part of a great team. My mum Michelle works for Helping Hand at Head Office and was always saying what an amazing organisation it is. So, when this job came up, I took a chance and applied for it’, she says.

In a role that focuses on customer service, Allyson is clearly a ‘people person’, juggling incoming phone calls and enquiries from residents and families with a smile. ‘I love interacting with people, hearing their stories. I’ve had so much support since I’ve started here and everyone has been so helpful and welcoming.’

‘I feel I have found my niche. I miss dancing, but I wanted more – and this is really my dream job.’ Not only has Allyson followed in her mother’s footsteps by choosing a career in aged care, but her grandmother worked in aged care as well.

Allyson is in her early twenties and is thriving in this role which has given her new insights into the day-to-day experience of residential care. ‘There is always something happening in terms of lifestyle activities and I’ve met people from many different walks of life. People just stop by reception for a bit of a chat and residents often ask me what I get up to on the weekend, which is fun.’

Outside of work, Allyson likes to keep active by relief dance teaching and she also teaches dance masterclasses. She and her partner also enjoy going on road trips and camping together.
